Weekly Discussion Questions

Why do the righteous suffer while the wicked seem to prosper?  In the days of Habakkuk, a prophet in the kingdom of Judah, it seemed that evil was prevailing.  The enemies of Israel were rising against the people of God and it appeared that God was not intervening.

  • At the beginning of chapter 2 Habakkuk compares himself to a watchman, he  prepares to wait for God’s answer and his response.  What instruction does the Lord give him in verses 2-3?

  • In the next verse, what is the contrast between the proud or “puffed up” and the righteous?

  • Paul references Hab. 2:4 in Romans.  Read Rom. 1:17.  How shall the righteous live?  As followers of Christ, how are we made right with God?

  • In verses 6-20, he discusses the “woes” of the Chaldeans.  List and describe each of them.

  • Can some of the woes listed in this chapter be applied to modern times? If so, what are some examples?

  • What reassurance do we as Christians have that is seen in verse 20?   1:4 and Psalm 46:10 both reflect on this reassurance that is mentioned in V.20.  After reading these verses, what are we reminded about God?

Prayer: Father, grant us patience and strengthen our faith when we struggle with our circumstances, particularly when we endure the unrighteousness of those who live among us.  Help us to wait upon you and remain faith to your word in all we do.
