Weekly Discussion Questions

Nahum is prophesying against Nineveh (660-650 BC). Nineveh is the capital of the Assyrian nation who has renewed its sin after repenting from the call of Jonah. The Medes and Babylonians destroyed Nineveh in 612 BC.

  • When you ponder about God, what ideas come to your mind?

  • Read Is 6:1-5, Rev 4:8, I Sam 2:2, Lev 19:1-2, 1 Pet 1:14-16. In Isaiah 6 the seraphim sang to each other “Holy, Holy, Holy….”. The use of the term 3 times in succession is a Hebrew literary device that emphasizes the word repeated. We never see the other attributes of God repeated like this.

  • Before the Ninevites are brought up God reveals who He is to all people. What attribute does 1:2 reveal to us about God?  What brings forth His wrath?

  • What attribute does 1:3 reveal to us about God?

  • What attribute do we see in 1:4-5?

  • What is the answer to His hypothetical question in 1:6? Read Romans 3:9-18. None of us can stand before a Holy God. His wrath and justice is upon us not because of our degree of sin but for even the smallest sin.

  • What is the “bad news” of the Gospel?

  • What attribute(s) does 1:7 reveal to us about God? How does this attribute fit into the Gospel? This is the Good News. He KNOWS Us. Those who entrust themselves to Him. Read 2 Cor 5:21. How was this done?

  • Relate verse 15 and Is 52:7 to Paul’s context in Romans 10:15.

  • Can you clearly communicate the Gospel to someone?

Prayer: Father, may we always consider your great attributes as we bow before you.  Thank you for the gospel offered to us in spite of our sin.  Save us God from judgment we pray.
